Florida’s Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP) identifies Impaired Driving (alcohol and/or drug impaired) as one of Florida’s Safety Emphasis Areas. The Impaired Driving Strategic Plan was created and updated annually by the FIDC and supports the SHSP. The Plan includes strategies that focus resources and investments on reducing fatalities and serious injuries related to impaired driving, including:

- Data and Records
- Prevention
- Criminal Justice System
- Communications Program
- Alcohol and Other Drug Misuse: Screening, Assessment, Treatment and Rehabilitation
- Program Evaluation and Data

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) completed a Highway Safety Program Assessment for impaired driving in 2015. The FIDC used the information provided in this assessment to help guide the development of the Goals, Objectives, Strategies, and Actions in the Impaired Driving Strategic Plan. The assessment identifies the strengths and accomplishments of the FIDC and provides recommendations for improvements to the Strategic Plan.
